Citizenship

At Bolder Academy, our Citizenship curriculum is designed to develop our students into kind, strong, brave young adults where a Bolder future awaits.

The aims of the Citizenship Curriculum

  • Develop students’ understanding of British values, diversity, inclusion, our justice system, legislative system and the rights and responsibilities of citizens as well as the liberties enjoyed by British citizens.
  • Develop students’ understanding of the British political system, how the United Kingdom is governed and the role citizens have within that system.
  • Educate and engage students in the ways citizens can participate actively in supporting that community.
  • Learn the functions and uses of money, and the importance and practice of budgeting, and managing risk.
How we deliver Citizenship

Citizenship is taught during personal development, where students have 30 minutes of learning per week. They will also participate in activities during our Values Days and engage with topical issues during assemblies. Teaching should equip students with the skills and knowledge to explore political and social issues critically, to weigh evidence, debate and make reasoned arguments. It should also prepare students to take their place in society as responsible citizens.

Students are taught:
  • The development of the political system of democratic government in the United Kingdom, including the roles of citizens, Parliament and the monarch.
  • The operation of Parliament, including voting and elections, and the role of political parties.
  • The liberties enjoyed by the citizens of the United Kingdom.
  • The nature of rules and laws and the justice system, including the role of the police, and the operation of courts, tribunals and British values.
  • The roles played by public institutions and voluntary groups in society, and the ways in which citizens work together to improve their communities, including opportunities to participate in school-based activities.
  • The functions and uses of money, the importance and practice of budgeting, and managing risk.
  • As well as citizenship being covered in the Being Bold weeks, themes are also covered in other curriculum areas, such as democracy in History lessons and the use of money in mathematics.

The intended Impact of Citizenship

We will know if we have been successful when our students live and breathe our three core values within the Academy and beyond. When they demonstrate:

  • Kindness: By developing healthy relationships with their peers at Bolder, online, and within the wider community, respecting individual’s political beliefs.
  • Strength: By demonstrating a growth mind-set and positive attitude to their learning, their wider Academy life, and the wider community around them.
  • Bravery: By embodying and expressing fundamental British values within the Academy and the wider community.
