Drama

At Bolder Academy, our Drama curriculum is designed to develop our students into kind, strong, brave young adults.

Intent

We believe that students deserve a broad and ambitious Drama curriculum, rich in skills and knowledge, which immerses students in a range of styles.

The curriculum will encourage students to become confident and independent thinkers, who will be able to create original work and critically analyse professional and non-professional repertoire.

The aims of the Drama Curriculum

The Drama department has a firm philosophy founded on preparing the minds of young people to cope with the outside world as well as educating students about theatre and its history. The Drama curriculum aims to:

  • Develop creativity through understanding the benefits of participation in the arts, performance and creativity during their school journey;
  • Develop co-operation & collaboration;
  • Develop confidence in communication through developing vocal and physical skills;
  • Explore social issues through drama to develop tolerance and understanding;
  • Be exposed to different peoples’ perspectives and emotions on issues and events;
  • Be exposed to and use subject specific vocabulary effectively;
  • Study the history and influence of different practitioners on drama;
  • Develop an understanding of how to apply and analyse different stylistic qualities such as Naturalism, Physical theatre, Epic theatre and Surrealism
  • Students will have an appreciation of their own work and that of others, always demonstrating respect and empathy.
  • Develop an ability to evaluate their own and others’ work.

How we deliver Drama

There is one Drama lesson per week through Year 7, 8 and 9.

Students in Drama are taught:

  • How to perform effectively;
  • To produce creative work by exploring ideas and recording their experiences;
  • How to work effectively both individually and as part of a team;
  • To analyse and evaluate their own work and that of others;
  • To use a range of basic vocal and physical techniques to develop characterisation and storylines;
  • Different styles of acting (such as the style of melodrama) and how to apply them to performances are studied.

Our Intended Impact in Drama

We will know if we have been successful when our students live and breathe our three core values within the Academy and beyond. When they demonstrate:

  • Kindness: By being compassionate and empathetic when studying dramatic characters and reviewing others’ performances.
  • Strength: By adapting, refining performances and, responding to feedback.
  • Bravery: Knowing the importance of developing life skills such as performing and public speaking.

Equally we want to prepare students effectively for the current and next stage in their learning, whether this be GCSE or A Level examination, University study or the world of work.
