History

At Bolder Academy our History curriculum is designed to develop our students into kind, strong, brave young adults where a Bolder future awaits.

The aims of the History Curriculum

The aims of the History curriculum are to:

  1. Create global citizens who are equipped, through skills taught, to make independent judgements on the past, whilst having a secure knowledge of the environment around them.
  2. Equip students with a secure, chronological understanding of Britain’s island story, Britain’s role in the wider world, and the wider world.
  3. Understand the complexities of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and the relationships between different groups.

How we deliver History

Bolder Academy follows the national curriculum and uses enquiry-based learning.

Students study:

  • British, local and world history.
  • Significant events where they are making connections, drawing contrasts and analysing trends.
  • Historical terms and language.
  • Historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity, difference and significance.
  • Works written by historians.

The four teaching cycles each academic year allow students to ask perceptive questions, think critically and weigh up evidence. Students are also expected to develop perspective and to make reasoned judgements.

Throughout KS3 students revisit time periods in history and supplement their knowledge with a growing appreciation of world events and their impact.

Our Intended Impact in History

We will know if we have been successful when our students live and breathe our three core values within the Academy and beyond. When they demonstrate:

  • Kindness: Showing compassion and empathy when studying historical events, individuals and societies across the world.
  • Strength: An understanding of the importance of subject-specific knowledge when analysing the past; both within the United Kingdom and of the wider world.
  • Bravery: By continually developing life skills such as thinking, evaluating, analysing and communicating.

Equally we want to prepare students effectively for the current and next stage in their learning, whether this be GCSE or A Level examination, University study or the world of work.
