Personal, Social and Health Education / Relationship and Sex Education (PSHE/RSE)
At Bolder Academy, our PSHE/RSE curriculum is designed to develop our students into kind, strong, and brave young adults, where a Bolder future awaits. It aligns with, and fully covers, the latest governmental guidelines for PSHE/RSE.
The Aims of the PSHE/RSE Curriculum
The aims of the PSHE/RSE curriculum are to:
- Allow students to make informed decisions about their own health and wellbeing.
- Inform students of the rules and principles for staying safe online.
- Provide students with the knowledge to help them develop healthy, nurturing relationships of all kinds — not just intimate ones.
- Raise awareness about the dangers of knife crime, substance abuse, and the importance of forming healthy relationships.
PSHE/RSE is mainly taught every two weeks using a carousel model, where each lesson changes weekly to cover different topics. The curriculum is also supported through regular assemblies.
Specialist topics — such as sexual health, drugs, and the dangers of pornography — are delivered by expert providers during the school’s Bolder Value lessons.
Before any of these specialist sessions, Bolder shares an overview of what will be covered, allowing parents/carers to make an informed decision about whether they wish their child to take part.
- Talk about their emotions accurately and sensitively, using appropriate vocabulary.
- Identify harmful behaviours online and understand how to keep themselves safe.
- Recognise different types of bullying (including cyberbullying), understand its impact, the responsibility of bystanders, and how to seek help.
- Understand the characteristics of positive and healthy friendships.
- Recognise how stereotypes — particularly those based on sex, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or disability — can be harmful.
- Understand acceptable and unacceptable behaviour in relationships.
- Apply basic first aid skills for common injuries.
- Maintain personal hygiene and healthy eating habits.
PSHE/RSE is also taught within the Citizenship curriculum, where students receive twenty minutes of weekly learning. Related themes are further explored in other subjects — for example, E-safety in Computer Science and physical wellbeing in PE. Sixth Form students also take part in Careers sessions during form time.
We know we have been successful when students live out Bolder Academy’s three core values, both in and beyond school:
- Kindness: By developing healthy relationships with peers, behaving respectfully online and in the wider community, and acknowledging diverse political beliefs.
- Strength: By showing a growth mindset and a positive attitude to learning, school life, and their community.
- Bravery: By raising concerns with a trusted adult when they witness or experience unacceptable behaviour — online or in person.
